How Reliance Jio plans to take on Amazon, Flipkart with 'super app'

As Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director, Reliance Industries, prepares to officially launch world's largest online-to-offline new e-commerce platform and give jitters to Amazon and Walmart-Flipkart, Reliance Jio is reportedly working on a "super app" that will provide over 100 services at one platform.

Jio is now serving over 300 million subscribers in India as data and voice traffic has seen an unparalleled growth.
According to experts, launching a "super app" at this juncture would put Reliance in a pole position to create India's WeChat, in the market where others like Snapdeal, Paytm, Freecharge, Flipkart and Hike have failed.

"The ubiquitousness of Jio devices puts Reliance in a powerful position. It can connect its vast ecosystem of its users with a multi-layered fabric, offering a rich array of services, connecting online-to-offline, through a one-stop, super app," Prabhu Ram, Head, Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), CMR, told IANS.

Reliance Jio's "super app" will facilitate ecommerce, online bookings and payments -- all at one place.
"India is a mobile-first nation and such a self-contained network that offers convenience will find favour with demanding consumers," Ram emphasised.

The tech stack at Reliance Jio, via a series of acquisitions and investments, now includes a conversational Artificial Intelligence (AI) layer, a vernacular voice tech layer, a logistics layer, as well as a AI-based education layer.

"All of these layers, on top of the Jio devices network would put Reliance in a pole position to create India's WeChat," Ram noted.
The fast-growing Indian ecommerce market, poised to touch $84 billion in 2021 from $ 24 billion in 2017 (according to a joint report by Deloitte India and Retail Association of India), is set to face massive disruption with Reliance's entry.

According to Mukesh Ambani, the new commerce platform will aim to transform the lives of around three crore merchants across the country, enabling them to do all that large enterprises and e-commerce giants are able to do with the help of technology.

"Reliance is working on creating the world's largest online-to-offline New Commerce Platform," Ambani said at the "Make in Odisha Conclave" in November last year.
On the other hand, after successful execution of mobility business, Jio is now focused on catapulting India's underserved Home and Enterprise connectivity market to global standards with its next-generation GigaFiber FTTH services.

Reliance Jio Infocomm reported a 64.7 per cent increase in its standalone net profit for the January-March quarter of the financial year 2018-19, on an year-on-year basis.

The standalone net profit for the fourth quarter (Q4) of the last fiscal was Rs 840 crore, up from Rs 510 crore reported during FY 2017-18.
The company reported a standalone revenue from operations of Rs 11,106 crore during the quarter under review, 55.8 per cent higher from Rs 7,128 crore during the same quarter of the previous fiscal.

Flipkart vs Amazon: Consumer complaints on the rise as sales go up

The share of e-commerce complaints of the total NCH complaints is set to jump from 18% in September to 20% this month. Flipkart and Amazon have registered the maximum complaints.

The festive season sales spearheaded by e-commerce giants Amazon and Flipkart registered higher sales than last year. However, what also on the rise are consumer complaints. Since the past year, the e-commerce sector has seen the highest number of consumer complaints on the National Consumer Helpline (NCH) among all sectors, including telecom and banking. It is, moreover, set to spike in October because of the sales, a report in The Economic Times mentioned.
The share of e-commerce complaints of the total NCH complaints is set to jump from 18% in September to 20% this month. Flipkart and Amazon have registered the maximum complaints, as mentioned in the daily.
In September, consumer complaints surged by 22% over last year, forming 18% of the total 47,000 NCH complaints. It means that the e-commerce sector registered 8,500 complaints, which is a rise from 6,908 complaints that were registered last September, when the sales were held.
There were 1,236 complaints against Flipkart, while Amazon saw 1,052 complaints between September 14 and October 15. Paytm Mall saw 765 complaints and Snapdeal saw over 400. According to the daily, Flipkart said that the number is actually 1,125, out of which 35% were queries.
It must be noted that the figure is rather negligible considering that there are about 1.2-1.3 million e-commerce shipments in a day. It must, however, be kept in mind that many consumers complain to the company directly or through social media and not through the helpline.
There have been 4,700 complaints in the first 15 days of October but is likely to increase because of the sales. Last October, the number was 8,944.
Experts believe that this spike could also be because Indian e-commerce is experiencing a surge in the number of first-time online shoppers. There could be a mismatch between their expectation and experience.
Additionally, there is a strong menace of counterfeit products sold online. Two surveys had earlier this year pointed that one-third of e-commerce customers receve counterfeit products

Flipkart claims lead over Amazon in smartphones

Flipkart has kept its lead over Amazon India on smartphone sales, even as both platforms claimed more than doubling of sales in the category on the second day of festive sales. Flipkart claimed to have sold 1.3 million smartphones in the first 20 hours, double the number of orders as compared to the same period last year.

Flipkart had seen overall sales of Rs 1,400 crore in a single day last year during the smartphone sales day. The company did not disclose gross sales number. Flipkart also claimed an overall market share of 65% of online sales, and 75% in smartphone category since the start of its flagship Big Billion Day event on Wednesday. Amazon claimed a higher growth in sales in the smartphone category.

"We have already seen a 100% increase over previous Diwali, even before the end of Day One. For smartphones, we saw an even larger gain, that grew 150% over 2016," said an Amazon spokesperson.

Analysts tracking the sales are saying that gross merchandise value (GMV) on Thursday could have crossed Rs 2,500 crore. "Overall, on Day 1 of sales on Wednesday, the industry saw a GMV of Rs 1,000 crore," said Anil Kumar, CEO, RedSeer.

Among the best selling phones on Flipkart were iPhones and Redmi Flipkart were iPhones and Redmi Note 4 as well as Samsung S7 and S8, Flipkart's Smrithi Ravichandran said. Amazon did not respond to specific queries till the time of going to print.
Amazon kicked off its Great Indian Festival for all customers on Thursday, after giving an early access to Prime customers for 12 hours on Wednesday, in which it saw large appliances emerging as the biggest category.
Industry experts said both platforms changed prices on some products to match deals that did well on rival platform, especially on products like MacBook Air and iPhones. The trend during day two on cashback website CashKaro was that top players Flipkart and Amazon India were neck-toneck on their smartphone sale war, because of price-matching.

"When Flipkart started their sale at midnight, they had very good pricing on iPhone, which Amazon matched within the night," said Swati Bhargava, cofounder, CashKaro. "Alternatively, MacBook Air price was lower on Amazon, which was matched by Flipkart."

However, Paytm Mall, the third player in the ecommerce sales war, claimed to have the lowest prices across platforms. The company received smartphone orders from customers across 700 cities and town within 24 hours, with iPhones and Samsung Galaxy J3 Pro emerging as the top-selling smartphones, registering 12x surge in order volume over regular days.

Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus feature same 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays but with up to 25 per cent more brightness and support wide colour gamut.

The latest iPhones are powered by Apple’s A10 Fusion chipset clocked at 2.23GHz, which beats most mobile benchmarks in terms of numbers. The new iPhones are faster and are also capable of processing 4K videos on the go. With iPhone 7, Apple has made OIS standard and introduces six-element f/1.8 aperture lens. The iPhone 7 Plus gets an additional 12MP f/2.8 sensor equivalent to 56mm for shooting telephoto images. The bigger iPhone 7 also offers an option to shoot portrait with shallow depth of field.

Flipkart Aims 30% More Reach With Big Billion Days 2016

The biggest online shopping festival is launching as Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal and other key online marketplaces are upping the ante for their annual sale events. One of the major events is Flipkart’s ‘The Big Billion Days’ (BBD) that launches on 2nd October and concludes on 6th October.

As a concept, Big Billion Day was launched in 2014 as a one day sale initiative across categories. But over time, it has moved to a 5-day long full-fledged sale event with different categories opening on different days.

As opposed to The Big Billion Days 2015, which was an ‘App only’ sale, this year the sale is being extended across all platforms - App, website and m-site. To re-establish its connect this year with the users, Flipkart has announced the rollout of an integrated campaign that is one of the largest marketing initiatives being undertaken by the company this year.

Flipkart, which is aiming to grow its customer base as it launches its largest marketing campaign this year, recently said that it crossed 100-million registered users. “We aim to get 30% more reach this year with our campaign for Big Billion Days and will spend more than 20% of our budgets on digital channels to do this,” said Samardeep Subandh, Chief Marketing Officer at Flipkart.

As part of the marketing exercise, Flipkart has rolled out a series of videos that will attempt to inform the consumers that it is not just another sale event but the ‘Sale Event’ of the year. The key message that is derived from the campaign sums up the entire event - “ITNE mein ITNAAAA milega”. It communicates that no matter what one’s budget is, BBD increases its value with the unbeatable offers it has across categories. So staying within budget, one can upgrade or buy more and not let the budget dictate one’s shopping aspirations.

Conceptualized and executed by Lowe Lintas Bangalore, the brief shared to the agency was to land the fact that BBD is not just another sale event but rather it is the ‘Sale Event’ in India. To cut across the clutter and differentiate itself, Flipkart opted to use kids and show them in witty yet real situations.

Highlighting the creative thought-process behind the campaign, Arun Iyer, Chief Creative Officer, Lowe Lintas said, “Like most important events, The Big Billion Days have come to be an important event in the Indian context. These are the days when consumers unleash their inhibitions and go on a shopping spree with much gusto. The campaign thought ‘ITNE mein ITNAAAA milega’ is a colloquial expression that captures how Indians like it when they receive something extra by paying a small sum. This thought has been captured well by the kids that act as orchestrators of the message. It was an exciting campaign to work on, and we hope consumers like it as much.”

iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus Pre-Orders Open on Amazon, Flipkart

Apple's iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus have gone up for pre-orders via Amazon India and Flipkar. The latest iPhone models come in 5 colours including Jet Black and Black, with Apple having revealed the India prices for the entire iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus lineup earlier, alongside the shipping date of October 7. Both Amazon and Flipkart have dedicated pages for pre-orders.

The iPhone 7 will start at Rs. 60,000 for the 32GB variant. The iPhone 7 Plus will start at Rs. 72,000 for the same storage capacity. The 128GB and 256GB variants of the iPhone 7 will be priced at Rs. 70,000 and Rs. 80,000 respectively, while the iPhone 7 Plus will priced at Rs. 82,000 and Rs. 92,000 for the corresponding storage capacities.

Both Amazon India and Flipkart have unveiled pre-order offers for the smartphones. On Amazon, the company has detailed exchange offers along with a full list of eligible phones. Those who use the exchange offer will get additional cashback worth Rs. 4,000 in the form of an Amazon Gift Card. The company has also unveiled a 'no cost EMI' option, and those that opt for this will get cashback up to Rs. 8,000 as an Amazon Gift Card.

Customers who pre-order the smartphones on Amazon and sign-up for a 1-year Amazon Prime membership get a Rs. 500 Amazon Gift Card. Another offer (which lasts till October 14) for iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus buyers who download and sign into the Kindle app will get 80 percent off on Kindle eBooks (up to a maximum of Rs. 1,000 Kindle store credit).  The same offer extends from October 15 to October 30, but the maximum store credit will be reduced to Rs. 300. The company has also detailed that the recently unveiled 1+9GB Vodafone offer for new 4G handsets is applicable as well.

As for Flipkart, the company is detailing an exchange offer that can give a discount of up to Rs. 24,500 on the price of the smartphones. Those who use Citibank credit cards will get cashback up to Rs. 10,000.

The new iPhone 7 series sports a refreshed design and the rear antenna bands have been redesigned to make them less prominent than before. Both the phones feature a brand new home button that uses Taptic vibrations to simulate a physical tap. The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus also come with IP67 water and dust resistance.

Smartphone sales pick up pace online

E-commerce firms introduced exclusive smartphones and held sale events, which led to a revival of growth in online retail  in  August.

Online retailers are in a rush to sign tie-ups with Chinese smartphone vendors before the festive season.

Online sales of smartphones, the single largest product category in online retail, finally picked up in August after declining for two successive quarters when e-commerce firms pulled back on discounts and advertising, prompting shoppers to buy phones in stores.

Mobile phones and tablets accounted for about 55% of the gross sales of e-commerce firms in the quarter to December 2015. The proportion dipped to about 48% in the quarter to March, before picking up slightly to about 50% in the quarter to June, according research firm RedSeer Consulting.

In August, e-commerce firms led by Flipkart introduced exclusive smartphone models, organized sale events and registered increases in smartphone sales, which in turn drove a revival of growth in online retail, executives at e-commerce firms said.

Flipkart introduced smartphone models by Xiaomi and Lenovo, both of which sold out and helped the marketplace record an increase in its monthly sales after months of declining revenues. The Moto G4 Plus and OnePlus 3 smartphones, which are exclusive to Amazon, also saw strong demand.

Online retailers are in a rush to sign tie-ups with Chinese smartphone vendors before the festive season.

Flipkart has signed up Motorola’s Moto E3 Power phone on an exclusive basis and is aggressively pushing for exclusive tie-ups with top smartphone brands ahead of its flagship Big Billion Day in October, according to two company executives who requested anonymity.

“Flipkart enjoys an undisputed dominance in the online smartphones market, the share of which has only grown in the last few years. Further, share of online sales of smartphones has increased by 2% in the last quarter as compared to last December as per our estimates. We believe in expanding the market with initiatives meant to meet aspirations of Indians in every category. We will be going big in making quality products affordable to as many consumers as possible. While we cannot disclose the details of the 2016 edition of Big Billion Day, we will offer deals which customers have not experienced before. Our specially designed consumer programmes such as no-cost EMI (equated monthly instalments) and product exchange will enable customers to buy a lot more with a smaller budget this festive season,” said Ajay Yadav, vice-president, mobiles, at Flipkart.

“Smartphones account for the largest share of gross merchandise value (GMV). If you take out mobile phones, the average order value drops drastically,” said Anil Kumar, chief executive, RedSeer Consulting.

Partnerships between brands and e-commerce firms lead to higher customer satisfaction, better odds of product success and lower costs per unit, said Tony Navin, vice-president, partnerships and strategic initiatives at Snapdeal.

Brands such as Motorola and Xiaomi, which were available exclusively on Flipkart in 2014, now tie-up with Amazon and Snapdeal as well.

According to Noor Patel, director, category management at Amazon India, phone sales grew five times in the past one year. It has forged 57 partnerships with OnePlus, Motorola, Lenovo, Xiaomi and Samsung.

While smartphone sales have driven growth in online retail since 2014, an offline push by Chinese brands Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo has hit sales of online retailers this year. According to Counterpoint’s Market Monitor service, brands that grew significantly during the quarter were Chinese. While Vivo grew 759% from last year, Oppo clocked 183% growth and Xiaomi grew 35%.

Vivo does not have any online presence in India. Currently, it sells through about 10,000 retail stores.

“We are not completely ruling out the possibility of focusing on online sales. However, our decision to go online has not yet reached the implementation stage,” said Vivek Zhang, chief marketing officer, Vivo India.

Rival Oppo has a skeletal online presence through its tie-up with Amazon in August. It is aiming at opening 35,000 offline stores by year end. “Offline presence is necessary as it raises and captures consumer’s trust as they can experience the product physically and then decide on making a purchase. Online buying and selling being a growing trend, within the next two-three years, we will be investing more in online channels. We are looking at other channels like Flipkart to tie up with,” said Sky Li, global vice-president and managing director of international mobile business and president of Oppo India.

Asus is bringing Marshmallow to ZenFone Zoom and ZenFone Selfie

As far as Android 6.0 Marshmallow updates go, Asus is a laggard. Eight months after Marshmallow was released, Asus only rolled out the update to two of its phones – the ZenFone Laser, in May, and the ZenFone Max in early June. In contrast, Samsung, LG, or even HTC have updates out for a ton of their devices.

Better late than never, Asus is now bringing Marshmallow to the ZenFone Zoom and the ZenFone Selfie.

The updates are described on Asus’ ZenTalk forums(ZenFone Zoom and ZenFone Selfie), though the “changelog” is largely just a list of apps that Asus had decided to remove from the devices.

The ZenFone Zoom will lose Asus Backup, Google Play Books, Games, and Newsstand, Google+, and ZenFlash. You can still get these apps from the Play Store, if you wish. Factory-resetting the device will rid you of Asus Email, Asus Calendar, Asus Messaging, Asus Browser and Asus Music. Asus points you to Google’s homologous apps for alternatives.

The list of bloatware coming off the ZenFone Selfie after the update is even longer, and includes apps like Mirror, Omlet, and Dr. Eye. Just from their names, it doesn’t sound like you’ll lose much with the update.

We have a full listing of Marshmallow features here, but highlights include Google Now on Tap, Doze mode for improved battery life, and the granular permission model that gives you control over exactly what apps can access on your phone.
