WhatsApp's vacation mode will make all muted archived chats stay archived even when new messages arrive

WhatsApp is reportedly working on two new features ‘Vacation Mode’ and ‘Linked Accounts’. According to the report by WABetaInfo, the new feature will be released by Android, iOS and Windows Phone operating system platforms. The new ‘Vacation Mode’ is an extension of the company’s ‘Silent Mode’, which was recently rolled out to Android users.

The new ‘Silent Mode’ hides any notification dots for muted chats on the app, which means the users will not see how many new messages are in the muted chats from the WhatsApp icon on the device. This new feature is pre-activated for all WhatsApp users with the latest update for the app.

The ‘Vacation Mode’ will take this feature a bit further and make muted archived chats stay archived even when new messages arrive. Currently, WhatsApp unarchives any such chats, when there are new messages to read. The report states that users will have full control over the feature through the notification settings panel of the app.

The new ‘Linked Accounts’ feature will allow users to link their WhatsApp account to other social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The ‘Linked Accounts’ feature would be accessible for users under the WhatsApp profile settings once launched. Currently, this new feature will only bring support for Instagram as an external service. However, others will follow soon. The report further added that this feature might be targetted towards the WhatsApp Business app.

Four apps available on the Google Play Store were spying on users in secret, according to research released Friday by Mobile security company Lookout. Running a malicious code that Lookout has dubbed Overseer, the apps could track your latitude and longitude and collect information on who you were emailing when.

"That information is incredibly valuable to an attacker who wants to find out where a person is and who they're talking with," said Kristy Edwards, product manager for security research at Lookout.

One of the apps, called Embassy, functioned as advertised in the Play Store, letting users look up their nation's embassy in foreign cities. In the meantime, it turned users' phones into homing devices and sent out email contact lists to accounts hosted on servers run by Facebook and Amazon. The other apps advertised themselves as news apps but didn't actually work. Nonetheless, they also contained Overseer.

Google has since removed the apps from the Play Store, according to a Lookout spokesperson. Google confirmed that apps' removal bu declined further comment.


Edwards said she can't speculate on who created Overseer. She said the malicious software, which hasn't been identified in any other mobile apps so far, uses a novel technique to avoid detection.

Often, malicious software shows its hand by sending data to a random server in a foreign country. The fact that Overseer was sending user information to an account hosted by a Facebook server makes everything look above board.

That's useful for bad guys, because these days, companies are monitoring their employees' work phones for problems just like Overseer. Tricks like these make it hard to see "weird traffic," Edwards said.

WhatsApp is all set to roll out a new updated version of its app for Android and iOS. The beta version of the app with build number 2.12.194 is available on the company's website, and is expected to roll out on Google Play and the App Store soon.

The new version will bring a handful of new features like custom notifications, Mark as Unread, and a low data consumption setting for voice calls. Custom notifications lets users select particular types of notifications for specific contacts. Users can now choose to mute any chat for a specific time period, select ringtones, notification LED light behaviour, popup notifications, and the vibration length for messages.
