New sensors will let smartphones detect toxic gases

MIT researchers have developed new low-cost chemical sensors that can enable smartphones or other wireless devices to detect trace amounts of toxic gases.

Using the sensors, researchers hope to design lightweight, inexpensive radio-frequency identification (RFID) badges to be used for personal safety and security.

Such badges could be worn by soldiers on the battlefield to rapidly detect the presence of chemical weapons – such as nerve gas or choking agents – and by people who work around hazardous chemicals prone to leakage, researchers said.

“Soldiers have all this extra equipment that ends up weighing way too much and they cannot sustain it,” said Timothy Swager from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US.

ASUS NEW ZENFONE

Asus zenfone Go, Selfie and Zoom to be launched in India in August 2015

Asus has been teasing its ZenFestival 2015 to be held in India in August 2015 for a while now. The ZenFestival 2015 will play host to a global product launch alongside two other Zenfones in the country. The exact details about the time of the event to be held hasn't been disclosed but all that we know is that something big is coming as Asus has booked a whole stadium for the event.

It is being learnt that the Taiwanese manufacturer will launch the rumoured Zenfone Go in the country at the event which would mark its Indian as well as the global debut. The smartphone will probably be the cheapest one to go on sale in the Zenfone lineup. The Zenfone Go (model number ZC500TG) has had itself leaked before and is expected to come with a 5-inch display (1280 x 720 pixels), MediaTek chipset with 2GB of RAM, 8GB of expandable internal storage, 8-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front camera.

Lenovo k3- the smartphone of the year

Lenovo has launched the K3 Note smartphone in India, priced at Rs. 9,999. It will be available to buy via exclusive retail partner Flipkart in its first flash sale on July 8. The smartphone will be offered in Onyx Black, Pearl White, and Laser Yellow colour variants.

The Lenovo K3 Note features a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) display with a pixel density of 401ppi. It is powered by a 64-bit 1.7GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6572 processor that is coupled with 2GB of RAM. It supports both LTE bands in India (FDD-LTE 1800MHz Band 3, and TDD-LTE 2300MHz Band 40) and runs Android 5.0 Lollipop with Vibe UI on the top.

On the camera front, the K3 Note features a 13-megapixel rear camera with dual-LED flash and a 5-megapixel front facing camera. Slow internet can test anybody's patience and it becomes even more frustrating when a web page loads at a turtle speed on smartphones. Thankfully, Google is listening to our vines and the company is planning to launch a new feature which would enhance the search experience on mobile phones.

This new feature by Google would enable users even with 2G connection to load web pages faster and also by consuming less amount of data through Chrome or Android browser from Google search engine. The new service is still under the testing phase and it will take little longer before the full-fledged launch. As per the tests conducted, the service is suffice to keep the speed high and data consumption low. In a pilot test conducted in Indonesia, the results proved that with the new service the web pages load way faster (4x faster to be precise) and consume approx 80 percent lesser amount of data. The new feature will also allow the users to view web pages in their original form as well.

Google mentions that over 200 millions of Indians access the internet through their smartphones and the company is working towards making that mode of net browsing faster and cheaper. As per company's vision, if the new service receives success in reducing the waiting time per consumer even by a second, then also it would collectively save 2-3 years of waiting time.

Some more details of Xiaomi's upcoming flagship Mi 5 smartphones have leaked online once again, giving a glimpse of what to expect from the new model.

The leak, which comes from China, says that the handset will be launched in November and run on the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor. The new SoC was announced from at the Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona earlier this year. It will be built on a FinFET process, which could be either TSMC's 16nm or Samsung's 14nm process.

Along with the Mi5, Xiaomi is also said to be working on a new device, which is said to feature a 6-inch screen and said to be named the Xiaomi Mi5 Plus. Both the phones are said to feature full metal bodies and bezel-less designs.

The Xiaomi Mi5 will feature a 5.2-inch QHD screen with 2.5D glass, with either 3 or 4 GB RAM. The device will come in two different storage options of 16 GB and 64 GB, and will feature a 16 MP rear camera and a 3000 mAh battery. The device is also said to feature a fingerprint sensor.

The 5 Plus is also said to feature a 6-inch screen of the same QHD resolution, with 4 GB RAM across variants, and will come with a 20 MP rear camera. Xiaomi is also said to be introducing a fingerprint scanner named Sense ID with Mi 5. This fingerprint sensor reportedly works on ultrasound technology rather than the optical one.

Leaks suggest Xiaomi Mi 5 to be powered by Snapdragon 820 SoC

Xiaomi has been quite popular in these two years, and it has been the number one smartphone maker in their home country and been placed in the 'World Top 5' list within a small span of time. It has also been successful in other Asian markets like India, Malaysia, Singapore and others. Xiaomi announced 'Mi 4i' in a Global event in India, which first of its kind outside China.

It also launched 'Mi Note Pro' last week in China with 2K display and 64GB internal storage with a price tag of $483. Many of them are waiting for Xiaomi to launch its upcoming flagship 'Mi 5'. There are few leaks around the Mi 5 since some time ago. The latest one among them is the inclusion of still unreleased Snapdragon 820 SoC.

The upcoming Mi 5 will use Snapdragon 820 chipset instead of earlier leaked Snapdragon 810 chipset. Based on the source, the Snapdragon 820 will be manufactured using a 14nm process, which is also used for Exynos 7420 chipsets that are used in Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge. We don't confirm this until there is an official confirmation from the company.

Coming to the specs of the Mi 5, it is expected to feature a 5.2-inch QHD (2560×1460) display, a 20.7MP rear camera and 2MP front-facing camera. It may also include a fingerprint scanner with the device and will run on Android 5.0 Lollipop based MIUI OS.

The previous year's flagship Mi 4 is still a capable device in the high-end market, but the Mi 5 will be a noteworthy update. The Mi4 came with 5-inch FullHD display and powered by Snapdragon 801 SoC clocked at 2.5GHz with 3GB of RAM. It comes with two versions of 16GB and 64GB internal storage with no microSD card slot. The Mi 4 has a 13MP rear camera with dual-flash, 8MP front-facing camera and a 3080mAh battery.
We expect the Mi 5 to be launched by the end of 2015 or early 2016 and will confirm all the details of Mi 5 once there is information from trusted sources. Until then take this with a pinch of salt.

Xiaomi Mi 5 Smartphone to feature a Fingerprint Scanner, 5.2" Quad HD display: Report

A Chinese tech blogger has shared some info about the upcoming Xiaomi Mi5 on the popular Chinese social network Weibo. The Chinese tech blogger confirms the 5.2" display with Quad HD resolution for the Mi5.

The new Xiaomi Mi5 is said to feature a 5.2 inches screen, it will be equipped with the Snapdragon 810 chip. Other specs include 4GB of RAM, 16MP camera with OIS, at least 3000mAh capacity battery.

The Chinese smartphone giant has filed a patent with the State Intellectual Property Office, China. This patent is to do with the integration of fingerprint scanning technology with the touch buttons found on a handset. This technology might be used on the home button of the device, much like the iPhone. It is being speculated that the Xiaomi's next flagship, the Mi5 might come with this technology.As of now, none of Xiaomi's devices sport a fingerprint scanner.

Some new images of alleged Xiaomi MI 5 appeared on Chinese social networking site Weibo. The image shows a phone similar in appearance to the current Xiaomi Mi4, and even has the familiar Mi logo and is running MIUI.

The device in this image measures between 5.5-inch and 5.7-inch whereas Xiaomi's Mi4 flagship is a 5-inch phone. The large screen has narrow bezels to keep the width down to a minimum.

More and more applications and enterprises are turning to hardware/software strategies to do just that, including the FIDO alliances universal 2nd factor ( U2F ) To the end user, however, that may mean a lot of tedious plugging and unplugging of smartcard-style U2F keys.
The YubiKey Neo (top) is a USB authentication key that offers a solution: It has a simple button that allows for one-tap token generation. And if you want security for, say, an Android phone or similar device, the Neo offers wireless connectivity via NFC. Its uber-cute sibling, the Neo-n (bottom), actually disappears inside a USB port, so you can leave it in full-time -- the "button" is simply a touch-sensitive edge you graze with your finger. (But the Neo-n doesn't support NFC.) These two keys can be deployed across a variety of applications, everything from Google account logins to password management to remote access and VPN. The YubiKey Neo sells for $50; the Neo-n, for $60.

The average shirt or pants pocket does a poor job of blocking radio signals. Okay, let's be clear -- it does no job of blocking them. According to some security experts, that could be problematic -- if you carry credit cards that have embedded RFID chips, for example, it's possible that someone with a scanner could slurp up your card numbers without you ever knowing it. And let's not forget the myriad wireless technologies built into your phone: Bluetooth, cellular, GPS, Wi-Fi and/or NFC. If you're serious about protecting both your data and your privacy, you might want to block some or all these signals.
That's the idea behind Silent Pocket's line of RFID-blocking products like The Suit, which looks like a fairly typical smartphone sleeve but, according to the vendor, includes shielding material that will block all the aforementioned kinds of signals. Call it a tinfoil hat for your smartphone.
The Suit (pictured here) starts at $30 for the canvas version and $70 for the leather version. Silent Pocket also offers a variety of secure wallets that start at $20.

If you've got to supply U2F security keys to your entire staff, costs can start to mount up. That is, unless you consider Plug-up's FIDO U2F Security Key, which is priced about $8. No, there's no catch -- that's the real cost for this driverless USB smartcard, which provides ultra-secure protection for Google accounts and other Web services that support the FIDO U2F standard.
The Plug-up card is made largely of lightweight plastic (according to the company, the "active" metallic part is about 0.03 in. thick), which you snap out of its holder and then assemble. Although it's designed expressly for use with Google Chrome (meaning it works with Chromebooks as well as Windows tablets and laptops), its open-source foundation allows developers to leverage it for other browsers -- important if your company still uses, say, Internet Explorer.
Because the Plug-up lacks a physical button, you must unplug it and then reinsert it every time you sign into an account. If that sounds like too much hassle, it might be worth spending a little extra on something like the YubiKey Neo.

Vysk EP1 privacy charging case and QS1 quantum security case

Many IT managers lose sleep at night thinking about company employees walking around with unprotected phones. There's not only the risk of data compromise, but there's also the problem of gravity (broken phones cost a small fortune to replace).
The Vysk EP1 Privacy Charging Case and QS1 Quantum Security Case are iPhone cases that aim to minimize both risks. In addition to everyday hard-shell protection (and, with the EP1, a 2,200mAh extended battery), these cases include a variety of privacy features. For example, both offer a sliding shutter that blocks both camera lenses when not in use, the idea being to prevent hackers from seeing anything they shouldn't.
Meanwhile, Vysk's privacy apps encrypt your photos, videos and text messages. The QS1 adds encrypted voice communication to the mix, locking out the iPhone's microphones in favor of the case's own, which in turns routes calls through Vysk's Voice app.
Both cases come in a variety of colors. The EP1 is available for both iPhone 5/5s and iPhone 6, with a price tag of $120. The QS1, currently for iPhone 5/5s only, is currently in pre-order for $230 and is expected to be in wide-scale release in June 2015.

See, your ticker generates an electrocardiographic (ECG) signal that can be used to prove you are you, though until now (except for your doctor's equipment) there's never been any kind of conduit between that "heart ID" and the rest of the world. The Nymi Band wants to be that conduit: It looks like a fitness band but will rely on your ECG to take the place of a password -- or, for that matter, a fingerprint.
That's the promise, anyway. For now, the nymi band discovery kit is shipping to developers for $149; they can also download the SDK and sample applications. No word yet on when it will be available to consumers.
